Abstract

This study aims to analyze the poetry reading ability of elementary school students in Tanah Datar Regency. The research is motivated by the importance of poetry reading skills as part of literary learning that develops students' aesthetic sensitivity, expression, and cultural appreciation. This research was prompted by a poetry reading competition organized by the PGMI Student Association which invited elementary school students throughout Tanah Datar Regency. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with 35 students as research subjects who participated in the poetry reading competition. Data collection techniques included observation of students' performance during poetry reading, documentation, and interviews with competition judges. Data analysis used the Miles and Huberman model encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the poetry reading ability of students in Tanah Datar Regency is still relatively low. This low ability is evident in the mastery of poetry reading aspects, namely expression, intonation, pronunciation, and appreciation. Many students have not yet mastered the aspects of emphasis, facial expression, pauses, and intonation properly, and still lack confidence when performing. Factors causing this low ability include lack of poetry reading practice at school, lack of modeling or examples from teachers, and students' lack of confidence. This study recommends strengthening poetry reading learning in elementary schools through modeling methods and regular intensive practice.
